Fallis, Megan

As an artist, I find myself particularly drawn to introspection, vulnerability, and the human condition. In exploring introspection, I aim to capture the inner workings of the human mind, examining the various thoughts, feelings, and emotions that make us who we are. Similarly, in exploring vulnerability and the human condition, I hope to create works that speak to our shared experiences as human beings, connecting us on a deeper level through art.

By using dramatic lighting, heavy shadows, and somber expressions, I seek to convey a certain emotional weight in each portrait. These techniques help to create a sense of depth and intensity, which helps to draw the viewer into the subject’s inner world. The contrast between light and shadow highlights the contours of the subject’s face, emphasizing their unique features and expressions. Overall, these elements work together to create a powerful and evocative portrait that captures the subject’s essence and emotional state.

My focus on women as subjects and the use of cool and neutral tones in my color palettes suggest a particular interest in exploring femininity and human emotion. By emphasizing these subtle nuances through my choice of subject matter and color, I create works that invite contemplation and reflection. Through these explorations, I seek to convey a deeper understanding and appreciation of the complexities of the human experience.

Each of my pieces represents a unique expression of my personal experiences and worldview. Through my art, I seek to communicate my thoughts, feelings, and perspectives in a way that resonates with others. By sharing these pieces with the world, I hope to create a dialogue and foster greater understanding and empathy between myself and my viewers. To demonstrate these unique expressions found within my work, I’d like to introduce three artworks: Monachopsis, Inure (Panacea), and Flutter.

Monachopsis, 2020
Charcoal on Paper
45.72 x 60.96 cm (18 x 24 in)

The definition of Monachopsis is: the subtle, but persistent, feeling of being about of place. This painting seeks to visually explore this common phenomenon. Through my art, I seek to capture and communicate this feeling to the viewer, which I hope then creates a sense of empathy and understanding. By examining this theme, I invite the viewer to consider their own experiences of displacement or disconnection, creating a space for reflection and introspection.

Inure (Panacea), 2020
Acrylic on Illustration Board
50.5 x 76.2 cm (20 x 30 in)

Inure: the acceptance of something undesirable
Panacea : all healing
Inure (Panacea), with its message of endurance and spiritual protection, reflects upon my personal experiences of resilience in the face of adversity. The work also speaks to my ongoing search for meaning and purpose in life, and the desire to find comfort and solace in times of difficulty. Through my art, I seek to communicate these ideas and inspire others to find their own inner strength and sense of purpose in the face of life’s challenges.
Flutter, 2022
Acrylic on Canvas

The focus of Flutter is the ephemeral nature of life. The symbolism of the butterfly suggests a preoccupation with mortality and the transience of existence. Through my art, I seek to explore and communicate the profound beauty and fragility of life, and the potential for growth and change that comes with embracing the impermanence of all things. By highlighting the transformative power of the butterfly, I encourage the viewer to reflect on their own journey of self-discovery and personal growth, reminding us all that change is a constant and necessary part of the human experience.
