Kohara, Momiji

Momiji Kohara is a contemporary artist who currently lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. After graduating from high school, she studied anatomy at Eastern New Mexico University for about two years before transferring to Temple University, Japan, to pursue her passion for art.

Employing drawing as her primary medium, Kohara adeptly communicates her experiences and emotions, centering her artistic expression around two primary themes: the beauty inherent in everyday life, particularly focusing on light and shadow, and women’s health. Despite lacking a background in art, she began her artistic journey with still-life drawings and gradually progressed to capturing the intricate beauty found in everyday moments. She emphasized the interplay of light and shadow in her sketches. Through her second theme, women’s health, she aims to communicate not only factual insights derived from her research on menstruation but also her personal experiences as someone enduring severe menstrual pain. Her artworks aim to resonate with individuals who have not experienced such pain, fostering a deeper understanding of menstruation and its associated physical and mental challenges.
