Mayura Sugawara is a Japanese contemporary textile artist who works in Tokyo and Kanagawa, Japan.
As a child, She had a tradition to visit her relatives in the Tohoku area of Japan during vacations where she explored beautiful nature and enjoyed spending time with her family members. Her family ties and childhood memories have been one of the biggest inspirations in her work production.
She started studying art at Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University Japan in Tokyo from 2018. In her first few years of her undergraduate program, she spent time exploring different mediums and ways of expression. She has been concentrating on creating embroidery and textile art for the last 2 years of undergraduate studies. What fascinates her about textile art is how it allows the audience to enjoy and appreciate the work in multiple ways such as touching, hearing and smelling.
To her, it is very crucial to create a space where people can enjoy art freely. She strongly believes that Art should be universal and enjoyed without any rules regardless of their background, gender, age, or whether they have knowledge about art. She hopes to make artworks that will bring people together and connect them deeply.
