Introduction

In Art Seminar, a senior capstone course for Art Major students at Temple University Japan Campus, students develop and strengthen their artistic voices through writing and portfolio-making projects while producing a solo exhibition at various venues of their choosing. Students plan, research, and negotiate with different places across Tokyo to produce and host their solo exhibitions. In this process, students critically observe and evaluate their practices to discern the most suitable context for their works. Art Seminar students have exhibited their works at art galleries, clothing stores, cafes, bars, bookstores, empty houses, and even a ramen shop in previous years.

It’s been a challenging time for the Spring 2021 Art Seminar students, as COVID-19 has made hosting physical exhibitions difficult. The students, however, have demonstrated their commitment to their work, research, and practice throughout this unsettling time, and as an alternative, we’ve organized an online exhibition of thesis works. The online works are also accompanied by links to graduating art-major students’ websites and social media accounts. We sincerely hope you’ll take this opportunity to take in the results of our graduating students’ efforts made during this difficult time.
